Hitman’s Bodyguard was #1 for the third weekend in a row and also topping out the lowest earning Labor Day Weekend in 17 years. But it doesn’t even matter, because we have our winners!
Weekly Picks Winner: Michael Dance – 16 pts
Cinema Conference: Doug Williams – $749,158,016
Film Conference: Danny Bessette – $915,788,589
Theater Conference: Jared Meyer – $787,966,261
Talkie Conference: Mike Barton – $802,081,815
The Conference Champs with the highest point total in Weekly Picks are Doug and Mike at 13 points each, so we go to the tie-breaker. Wonder Woman was the highest grossing movie of the summer and neither of them picked that so we go to the B.O. total of that movie. Mike guessed $400M and Doug guessed $412.7M. As of today, the total domestic box office gross for Wonder Woman is $409,537,039 so….
SMFL 2017 League Champion: Doug Williams
This really was a very interesting season. Literally, the worst movie going summer in years. Many are saying that this summer will be the death of the constant sequels and forced franchises. I don’t know if Hollywood is quite there yet, but a message was certainly sent and received. Weirdly enough, I felt that it provided us with a much less predictable game this year. Even the movies who a lot of people thought wouldn’t do so well (Baywatch, The Mummy, The House, King Arthur), I dont think anyone thought they were going to bomb as horribly as they did. That gave a lot of smaller movies a lot more power than they normally would. Another good example, not a single one of us predicted that Wonder Woman would be the highest grossing movie of the summer. Thank goodness for the tie-breaker…
Sometime during the middle of the summer, I thought things were done. I thought we weren’t going to see much of a change with the movies that were left, because none of them seemed like they were going to do anything. Boy, was I wrong! We had the closest races, right down to the very end, that we have ever had in this game. Most of you probably didn’t care since you had long given up hope of winning, but trust me, it was exciting!
Lastly, I just want to thank you all for playing. New players and returning players alike, thank you all for being a part of this stupid game that I put waaaay too much time into. This really is one of my favorite parts of my summer and I owe a lot of that to you guys. Your enthusiasm in your drafting to your trash talking emails, I love it all. Whenever I talk about this with people, I usually get 1 of 2 reactions: the polite “oh, thats neat” or the more expressive “wow, that sounds awesome!” You guys are the expressive people, who then actually show up to play! I really do hope you all enjoyed playing even half as much as I did. I hope you all come back next year, and please feel free to tell anyone else about it. The more we grow, the better this game gets. I hope to see you guys this Thursday night, especially if you won so I can give you your money (or I’ll just Venmo you). But win or lose, I’d love to share a drink with you and thank you all in person.
I love you.
